The first smartphone with Google’s Tango technology, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, is now officially available to purchase. We first met the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro back in June and walked away rather impressed with Lenovo’s implementation of Google’s augmented reality technology.
The Lenovo Phab 2 Pro packs a special sensor that allows you to create a real-time 3D map of the room you’re standing in. There are plenty of use-cases for that. Lenovo believes the Phab 2 Pro will be particularly compelling for interior designers, who can use special software to place digital objects, like couches or other pieces of furniture, in the real world.
Using the Phab 2 Pro, the designer can walk around the room and see how the furniture might fit. Seeing that as a real opportunity, Lenovo will sell the Phab 2 Pro in retail outlets that don’t normally sell smartphones, like Lowe’s home improvement stores.

Augmented reality can offer all sorts of other experiences, including unique games that can take advantage of the environment you’re in. Or, just for kicks, Lenovo showed me one demo where a life-sized dinosaur suddenly appeared in the room. Several titles are already available including Phantogeist, Raise and Woorld.
The Phab 2 Pro is true to its name: it packs a large 6.4-inch 1440 x 2560-pixel display. Under the hood, you’ll find a Snapdragon 652 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a large 4,050mAh battery, 16-megapixel camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.
The Phab 2 Pro goes on sale today, and we hope to have more information on it as soon as we get one in the office.
