Pokémon Sun and Moon are poised to become mega-hits before they even launch. Nintendo President Tatsumi Kishima touched on the subject during his most recent financial presentation, stating that the two games are the most pre-ordered games in Nintendo’s history.
According to Kishima, Sun and Moon’s figures tower over Alpha Sapphire and Omega Sun’s pre-order figures, and 3.5 million people downloaded the demo after it launched on Oct. 18.
Thanks to the Pokémon GO effect?
The presentation points to the success of the main Pokémon series thanks to the ongoing success of Pokémon GO.
Previous entries in the Pokémon series playable on the Nintendo 3DS system were Pokémon X and Pokémon Y in 2013 and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire in 2014. We also released the original games in this series, Pokémon Red, Pokémon Green, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Pikachu, as downloadable Virtual Console titles in February this year. These Pokémon series titles have seen an increase in sales despite having been on the market for some time already.
We already saw evidence of Nintendo’s mobile strategy working back this summer when Pokémon GO pushed the Nintendo 3DS over the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and boosted the sales of the main Pokémon games.
If Pokémon GO is truly helping the sales of Pokémon Sun and Moon, then I give all the kudos in the world to Nintendo and its former President Satoru Iwata for foreseeing this result. Now, I can’t wait to see if Super Mario Run has the same effect on the Nintendo Switch’s Mario game.
