There’s a secret one-handed keyboard in your iPhone

As our phones grow in size, using them with one hand becomes more difficult. Apple has introduced a few features that make one-handed use easier, but the typing experience leaves a lot to be desired.

Well, good news: There’s a hidden one-handed keyboard in iOS that should make typing with one hand a breeze. The bad news: You can’t actually use it.

Developer Steve Troughton-Smith recently discovered hidden code for a one-handed keyboard in iOS that pushes the keyboard to the side; either the left or right, depending on your preference. Apparently, it can be activated with an edge swipe.

Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t officially introduced the feature to iOS, which means the keyboard remains hidden in the iOS code. The strange thing is Troughton-Smith says the keyboard has been hiding since iOS 8, which was introduced back in 2014.

Too bad you can’t use it

That was when the iPhone 6 Plus was introduced, so it makes sense Apple was looking for more way to make one-handed use easier. What doesn’t make sense is Apple has yet to make the keyboard official. Apple may have been unhappy with the experience, which is why it chose to bury the code in iOS to rot away.

If you really want to try the keyboard out, Troughton-Smith says it can be activated with a Jailbreak tweak.

Or, you can download Microsoft’s Windows Phone keyboard for iOS, which features a clever one-handed mode.
