Samsung responds to new Galaxy Note 7 fire on Southwest Airlines (Update)

Earlier today, we reported on a story about a man whose Galaxy Note 7 caught fire on a Southwest Airlines flight. Brian Green, the owner of the Galaxy Note 7, told The Verge that he had been using a replacement device. Samsung has now responded to that claim.

“Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note 7,” a Samsung spokeswoman told TechnoBuffalo via email. “We are working with the authorities and Southwest now to recover the device and confirm the cause. Once we have examined the device we will have more information to share.”

Green provided The Verge with evidence of a “new” Galaxy Note 7 box, however, showing the black square that’s supposed to signify that the unit is safe to use. That’s what’s particularly scary about this situation – that hundreds of thousands of devices in the U.S. may still be at risk for causing fires. We’ll let you know as more information comes in.

Update: The CPSC has confirmed it will investigate the fire.
