Publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Omega Force – the team behind all the Dynasty Warriors games as well as the recent Attack on Titan game – announced that they were working on a Warriors-style game based on the long-running Berserk anime and manga series during E3 this year. At the time, the game was simply called Berserk [Working Title]. It was announced shortly after that the game would see a western release on PC, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita soon after the Japanese release.
The game was set for a September release in Japan and the company had spoken of a Fall or Winter 2016 release date for the game stateside. A recent delay, however, pushed the game out to the end of October in Japan, and that’s forced a delay for the US release as well.
This week during the Tokyo Game Show, though, we finally got a release date and an official title.
The game will officially be called Berserk and the Band of the Hawk.
The Berserk series tells the story of a swordsman named Guts, from his early years as a mercenary with the Band of the Hawk army to later years as he fights against his once-friend and now arch-enemy Griffith in a world that’s gone from war-torn medieval world to one overrun with all manner of demon and monster. Guts is the original ‘anime character with a huge sword,’ and the manga is legendary among fans of anime and manga, as much for its ultra violent art and setting as for the long run.
The manga the game is based on has been running since 1989, and has been receiving an American localization from comic book publisher Dark Horse, and it received its first anime adaptation back in 1997. It’s had a few video game iterations, including one that received an American release on the Sega Dreamcast, which recently celebrated its 17th birthday.
I’m not sure Berserk and the Band of the Hawk is the best title, but as a fan of the series I’m glad to see the game get an official release date – February 21, 2017. The game will release for the PlayStation 4, including a physical disc edition, and digitally for the PS Vita and for PC via Steam.
