Warner Bros. explains how it’s going to fix the DC Extended Universe

Tone is often cited as a big reason why Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were such critical failures. So how, in the middle of filming Justice League, does Warner Bros. intend on righting the ship? Lighten up.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Geoff Johns, DC Comics chief creative officer, and Jon Berg, a Warner Bros. executive, talked about how they plan on shifting the tone of the DC Extended Universe so it’s not so dark and grim.

“Mistakenly in the past I think the studio has said, ‘Oh, DC films are gritty and dark and that’s what makes them different.’ That couldn’t be more wrong,” Johns explained. “It’s a hopeful and optimistic view of life. Even Batman has a glimmer of that in him. If he didn’t think he’d make tomorrow better, he’d stop.”

Although Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad have collectively earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, Johns and Berg still admit that getting the tone right is important for the DCEU’s future. In addition to Wonder Woman and Justice League next year, there are a lot more movies planned, including Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg.

Johns and Berg explained they want people to be excited to see what’s to come, and not get hung up on the grim tone of the previous two films.

To start, Berg said that the story of Justice League was accelerated to “get to the hope and optimism a little faster” after seeing how people reacted to Batman v Superman. The film will also explain why Ben Affleck’s Batman was so extreme, and it’ll apparently include fewer of Zack Snyder’s “flourishes.”
