Fallout 4 and Skyrim mods won’t come to PS4, and Bethesda blames Sony

The PlayStation 4, unlike the PC and Xbox One, will not allow users to play mods for Skyrim or Fallout 4. The blame is on Sony.

PC gamers? Yeah, of course they’ve been playing Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with mods. That’s a standard for the platform with games made by developers smart enough to recognize the sales potential that an active modding community can bring to any game.

Microsoft and Bethesda have worked together to bring PC-made mods to Fallout 4 on the Xbox One. When Skyrim‘s remaster drops, it’ll also support mods on the Xbox One. The system isn’t perfect, but it’s a great step in the right direction.

The PlayStation 4? Bethesda announced today, with blame that’s rather uncharacteristic of the corporate world, the mods will not come to the PlayStation platform. Here’s the entire update from Bethesda:

After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.

Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.

We will provide an update if and when this situation changes.

The wording there at the beginning? This is pure conjecture from me, but it sounds like Sony wasn’t willing to let completely open ended mods appear on their platform. Whether they were afraid of software breaking stuff that could open the door for exploits or the possible appearance of inappropriate content is something we can only guess it, but it sounds like Bethesda and Sony simply couldn’t come to terms with regards to how mods should be used.

This stinks for PlayStation owners. The modding scene is a lot of fun, and few games feature the diversity and humor of the ones we see for Bethesda’s titles. Consoles have always been on the outside looking in, and this would have changed that notion.

Now? Bethesda wouldn’t make this statement unless the companies were completely deadlocked. I don’t see this one changing unless Sony hears it from gamers. Keep it civil, voice your opinions and see if you can change Sony’s mind.
