There’s been a lot to like from Nintendo’s recent barrage of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild footage. Runes show off new magic tricks that Link can use, axes allow him to interact with nature in a whole new way, and there is the guerrilla warfare he leads against the Moblin army. All nice and exciting, but these are new elements to the franchise.
This might come off as “wrong,” but I’m looking for something old. Something familiar. Something that I’ve seen Link do for the last 30 years.
And here we have it! The latest footage from Nintendo of America shows our hero using one of his most traditional weapons: bows and arrows, in all different varieties, too! Bomb arrows date all the way back to Link’s Awakening as a kind of secret weapon for those who experiment with mixing and matching items, and fire and ice arrows of course originated in Ocarina of Time.

Here, Link uses them to lay waste to yet another Moblin checkpoint. An explosive headshot takes out the first unsuspecting enemy, and Link then uses normal arrows to drop a bridge separating him from his enemies. A lone Moblin then charges at him, and a fire arrow neatly does away with his shield, followed by an ice arrow that leaves him easy pickings for Link’s sword.
Arrows have always been a popular choice in The Legend of Zelda as they are Link’s primary mode of projectile combat, and very likely, the same will happen again in Breath of the Wild.
Nintendo will release The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the NX when it launches in Q1 of 2017. It’s coming to the Wii U on the same day.
