Sony has released the latest PlayStation 2 Classic on the PlayStation 4, and the game is its excellent 3D platformer Ape Escape 2. Potential buyers can pick the classic up for $7.49 until Aug. 9, when it will revert to its normal $9.99 price.
Ape Escape 2 is one of the PlayStation 2’s most popular platformers and remains a high-point for the series. Sony hasn’t been active in pursuing the franchise in recent years, so hopefully this gives younger gamers a glimpse into why it was such a hit in the early days of 3D gaming. Who knows? Maybe someone at Sony will get the urge to start “monkeying around” again.
Ape Escape 2 was also one of the first games to be trademarked long before Sony announced plans to bring PlayStation 2 games to the PlayStation 4. Have we come full circle yet? Well, we’re still waiting for Ape Escape 3, and we’re also waiting to see if any third-party developers are looking to sinking money into retooling their classics for fan consumption.
Nope, doesn’t look like it.
