Today’s World of Final Fantasy trailer gives the most complete look at the battle system we’ve seen yet, and it is brought to us by the sassiest Shiva that the series has ever seen.
Actually, I’m a bit disappointed in the video. Not that the system doesn’t look deep or highly customizable, but rather because there is no excitement to it. Attack animations have what I like to call the “dink effect” in that they don’t look like they hurt the enemies all that much. Our female lead charges up a super attack with her special sword and lets loose on the Tomberry in front of her.
“…ouch,” he says before falling over. It might seem like a nitpick, but I’ve seen plenty of JRPGs fail because their attack animations don’t hold enough of a punch to make combat feel exciting.
But hey, at least Shiva is super cute! And that’s all that really matters about World of Final Fantasy, am I right? No, I’m not right. This will hopefully be a good game, because I don’t want my inevitable collection of figurines staring at me and reminding me of a boring experience! Please, do something about those effects, Square Enix!
World of Final Fantasy launches for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on Oct. 25.
