Japan’s best selling video games so far in 2016

Care to take a guess at Japan’s most popular video games so far in 2016? If you thought it was Pokémon, Mario, Monster Quest, or Yo-kai Watch, you’d be horribly mistaken. Instead, the franchise sitting on top made a grand return to popularity this year, once again showing that it is the eternal slumbering king who awakens once every few years.

Of course, we’re referring to Dragon Quest. Three of the top ten games hail from the franchise including Dragon Quest Heroes II at number 9, Dragon Quest Builders at number 7, and Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 claiming the number one spot.

Dragon Quest: back then, now, and forever, my friends.

Western developed games in the top 50 extend to only Minecraft, Uncharted 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, and The Division.

Keep in mind that this list was compiled before the release of Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi and Tempura, so the stats might no longer favor Square Enix’s series. See the full list below.
