Amazon’s employee base soared 47 percent in one year

Amazon’s growth is incredible. The company now has 268,900 employees around the world, nearly doubling since last year. It added 23,700 in the last quarter alone, according to GeekWire, which first spotted the figures following Amazon’s earnings report earlier this week.

Amazon confirmed the employee growth was needed for its distribution centers, which are placed all around the United States to help it deliver products to Amazon Prime customers. That figure doesn’t necessarily represent employees who are clocking in at 9 a.m. and leaving at 5p.m., GeekWire explained. It also includes employees who work for Amazon on a part time basis, but does not account for other employees who work for Amazon for a few months out of the year, like during the busy holiday season.

The next time an Amazon Prime box arrives at your door, sometimes on the same day you ordered it, remember it was the work of thousands of Amazon employees — not to mention third-party delivery drivers — who made it all possible.
