Because my life is seriously lacking in beefy Japanese dudes punching the lights out of each other, SEGA will be there to compensate in early 2017. Yakuza 0 has been pile-driven with an official release date of Jan. 24 for the PlayStation 4.
Now, you’re thinking that because I live in the city with Japan’s largest crime family that I must see stuff like this everyday. After all, the series is known for its realistic depiction of Japan, right? Well, it looks like Japan, but I’m sorry, I’ve only ever seen a yakuza punch a dude in the face once. And it didn’t look nearly as painful as when Kazuma Kiryu does it.
Yakuza 0 takes the franchise back to the early 1980s, and it stars a much younger Kazuma Kiryu. No, he is not the honorable and weather-beaten anti-hero you remember him as in the modern games. This is a much more violent and dangerous young man, not yet in touch with his lost humanity or contempt for corruption behind the scenes. He is one scary dude in this game.
My guess is that he will end up alright over the course of the story, and luckily, SEGA keeps cranking them out in the West for its hardcore fanbase. Keep fighting the good fight, SEGA. Localizations are important!
Yakuza 0 will be released for the PlayStation 4 on Jan. 24.
