A man in the United Kingdom, Daniel Kelly, was recently sentenced to 14 months in the slammer for flying a drone into a prison. Kelly was reportedly busted trying to fly contraband, including  “spice, a psychoactive substance, and tobacco” into three local prisons around Hertfordshire and Kent, the Kent police said this week.

“The drone was found in the boot of the vehicle,” the police department explained. “In an attempt to avoid detection, it had been sprayed black – having previously been white. Black tape had also been placed over its lights. Flight data revealed that Kelly used the drone to send items into HMP Elmley on 20 April and into HMP The Mount on 23 and 24 April. He also used it to fly into HMP Swaleside on 25 April.”

The police department said this is the first known case of sentencing for a drone-related crime in this fashion. What will criminals think of next?
