Swedish professional alpine free-skier Matilda Rapaport tragically passed away in an accident while filming a commercial for Ubisoft’s upcoming extreme sports game, Steep. Rapaport was caught in an avalanche in Chile. She was found buried beneath the snow, taken to a hospital and died from oxygen deprivation and brain damage.

Ubisoft released a statement regarding the tragedy. Here’s what a spokesperson told Gamespot.

“We are deeply saddened to learn the death of Matilda Rapaport, the remarkable Swedish freeskiing athlete…During a video production in Chile on Thursday, July 14th, Matilda was caught in an avalanche. Despite the medical care and treatment over the subsequent days, it was not possible to save her life.

Matilda’s courage, passion, and desire to share the sport she loved with the world served as an inspiration for other athletes and for us all. This tragic accident has deeply touched us. Our hearts and prayers go out to her husband and her wider family at this difficult time.”

Steep debuted this year at E3 during Ubisoft’s press conference. The title’s big push was its extreme sports mechanics, open world and community feel. Ubisoft has not commented regarding how this tragedy will affect the future of the game or its marketing.
