The very nature of open world games often causes us to miss some of their best features. Games like Red Dead Redemption are meant to simulate living worlds, and Rockstar does it better than just about anyone else. While something like Grand Theft Auto V probably does an overall better job of it than Red Dead Redemption at this point – one game is just a couple years old, the other is more than six – Red Dead is still an incredible sight to behold.
Check out this time-lapse video, captured by Eurogamer‘s DigitalFoundry. They’ve upscaled it and rendered it at 60 frames per second, and when you pull away, this six year old game running on hardware well over 10 years old still approaches photo-realism.
All this does it make me salivate for the next chapter in the series. With GTAV under Rockstar’s collective belt, what new advancements could their next Western bring? Arrival on PC seems like a sure thing at this point. Close your eyes and imagine it running on maxed out settings.
We have no idea when a new Red Dead is coming out, but Red Dead Redemption is on Xbox One via backwards compatibility, and yep, it’s still excellent.
