Galaxy Note 7 event set for August 2

We’d heard the device would be announced earlier than normal, and now we have official confirmation. Samsung on Tuesday sent out media invites for an event scheduled for Aug. 2—only a few weeks from now—where it will announce the much-anticipated follow-up to the Galaxy Note 5.

We’ve already seen pictures of Samsung’s next device, so not much is being left to the imagination heading into the company’s Unpacked announcement. The handset looks a lot like the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus; just, you know, with an S Pen and upgraded specs. The pictures also reveal four possible color options, including black, silver, blue and pink.

While we won’t get official confirmation until Samsung’s event next month, we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Some rumored specs are below.

  • 5.7-inch QHD display
  • 12-megapixel dual-pixel camera (OIS, PDAF)
  • 3,700mAh battery
  • 64GB and 128GB storage options; microSD support
  • IP68 rating

One of the standout features will allegedly be an iris scanner, allowing users to unlock their device just by looking at it. That will be something to keep an eye on (ha!) when it launches; will it be accurate? How quickly will it work?

Previous reports have suggested we could see the Note 7 release shortly after it’s announced, so start saving up now. And don’t forget to mark Tuesday, Aug. 2 on your calendar.
