Yooka-Laylee has the attention of my gaming generation. With game development veterans who worked on Banjo-Kazooie during the Nintendo 64 era in the Playtonic stables, there’s a lot of potential for a quality 3D platformer genre revival with this game.
They’ll need to modernize the old formula, though, and it seem they’re aware of that. Speaking with the PlayStation Blog, several Playtonic developers talked about the process of funding the game and working on it. You can read the entire interview in the source below, but there’s one particular quote from Writer Andy Robinson that I found genuinely reassuring.
These old 3D platformers featured a lot of collecting. That was the hallmark of the genre. Back then, it was fine to gather things for the simple pleasure of checking them off on a digital sheet and moving on. Finding all the Jinjos has no real bearing on Banjo-Kazooie, yet we aimed to do it anyways. With Yooka-Laylee? Frivolous collecting is out.
“We want to capture the good things about collect-athons from the past and avoid the tedium…
…Every collectible has meaningful impact on gameplay. For example, quills can be used to pay for special moves, butterflies refill the health and power meters, and Pagies unlock new areas and environments, which in turn open up fresh challenges and secrets.”
That excites me, for sure.
Yooka-Laylee doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s expected in early 2017.
