Who are the different characters in this summer’s Suicide Squad? You should be well acquainted with them by now, but in case you needed the Cliff’s Notes version, Entertainment Weekly has a nice breakdown along with some new portraits taken by photographer Clay Enos. Check them out in the gallery above.
What stood out to me is EW’s description of Joker, who is being played by Jared Leto. His look still isn’t quite working for me:
Jared Leto’s Joker is different than any we’ve seen before—less theatrical than Jack Nicholson, more unhinged than Heath Ledger—but no less psychotic. Despite all his power, this Clown Prince of Crime is having difficulty reuniting with true love Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)—a rift that has left him agitated and… well, slightly sad.
I don’t think anybody is under any illusions that Leto’s Joker is going to be better than Ledger’s; the man won a posthumous Oscar for his role in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, after all. But you have to admire Leto taking a new approach rather than simply mimicking what’s already been done. Earlier this year, Suicide Squad director David Ayer revealed Leto’s Joker was inspired by drug lords of Instagram. Take that for what it’s worth.
Suicide Squad hits theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
