Koei Tecmo delivered a whole batch of screenshots for its new Berserk “musou” though the game’s official website, and they are about what you should expect. A high quality engine being used for cheap action. Accurate recreations of poplar characters set in a somewhat empty, fake world.
And blood. Lots and lots of blood.
The screenshots make this game looks like the second coming, but I wouldn’t get too wrapped up in them. This game is made especially for Berserk fans, and unless that is your main pull into checking out this game, you might be better served looking at any one of the dozens of other musou games out there. It doesn’t look to revolutionize the formula in any meaningful way.
A new “Kill-Crush” system will allow attacks to become more powerful with each passing blow, but that’s just an excuse for more mindless action. Again, it’s cheap fun and will probably satisfy a lot of people out there looking for brash thrills.
Berserk launches in Japan on Sept. 21 for the PlayStation 4, but Koei Tecmo has not confirmed a North American release date. 2017 is a safe bet.
