The Galaxy Note 7 is rumored to arrive next month and we’ll probably get an upgraded version of Samsung’s Gear VR to match. Now the new virtual reality headset may have leaked on its way to India for testing.
The new Gear VR popped up on Indian shipping database Zauba under the model number SM-R323. That seems like a clear sequel to the current Gear VR (model number R322). Earlier developer versions followed the same pattern, including the original R320 and the subsequent R321.
The Galaxy Note 7 will likely be Samsung’s first phone with a USB-C port, which explains why it may require a new Gear VR. The company could also use this opportunity to pack the headset with new sensors and more powerful hardware for a better experience, if it decides to take that route. That should help it compete with Google’s similar Daydream virtual reality platform, which is set to launch later this year.
Samsung bundled the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge with a free Gear VR when they launched and we hope it has similar plans for the Galaxy Note 7. The company is expected to make its big announcement on August 2, but it’s possible we’ll see the refreshed headset leak even sooner.
