Apple is going to push folks to register as organ donors, according to a recent report from the Associated Press. The company will reportedly build the request into its Health application in iOS 10, the firm’s new iPhone and iPad operating system that’s set to launch this fall.
Apple has slowly built Health into a one-stop destination for discovering trends about one’s personal health, including steps taken and other information such as heart beat data, thanks to integration with the Apple Watch and third-party products. The organ donor request will reportedly appear in a pop-up window, the Associated Press said, and Apple hopes this will vastly increase the number of people willing to donate organs at death. Registrants will be added to a national organ donor database.
The Associated Press suggested the late Steve Jobs may have helped influence the new feature. Apple CEO Tim Cook described Jobs’ wait for a new liver 7 years ago as “excruciating.” With more folks willing to donate organs, those wait times can be significantly lessened.
