In Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link can shield surf – Here’s how it works

I talked about this a bit in my hands-on preview of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild during E3 2016, but Link can hop on his shield and surf in this game. Not only that, he can fire arrows, use his sword and wield other weapons on his way down, too.

You can see shield surfing on display in the video above from YouTuber Arekkz Gaming

The downside? Shield’s degrade just like weapons in Breath of the Wild, and riding down a hill while standing on your shield causes it to wear down, too. I personally suffered multiple shield breaks while surfing during my time with the game at E3.

The video doesn’t describe exactly how to shield surf, so I figure I’ll tell you now. It’s a little complicated as it requires some timing and button presses. You need to be standing on or near a slope, hold the left trigger to pull out your shield, jump, press A while in the air and land on the slope itself. From there, weapons work just like they normally do.

We don’t have a precise release date for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild yet, but the game is scheduled to launch for both the Wii U and Nintendo NX at the same time. It’ll be a launch title for the NX, and that’s expected in March 2017.
