Fallout: New Vegas now backwards compatible on Xbox One

Fallout: New Vegas has finally found its way onto the Xbox One, with Microsoft making it playable through the magical powers of backwards compatibility. I know all the kids are busy building their treehouses in Fallout 4, but for those who want a treat in genuine role-playing, there is no better place to turn than this Obsidian developed title.

Fallout: New Vegas was originally derided for its bugs upon release, and the general consensus saw it as a step back from the freedom allowed in Fallout 3. This “freedom” was all the rage those days, go where you want and do what you want, and Fallout: New Vegas, for all that it does right, guides players along an invisible wire, putting more emphasis on human interaction than getting out and exploring.

Not what we were looking for in 2010, everything we are looking for in 2016!

The game has undergone a serious re-evaluation since then, and many now see it as the best of the modern Fallout games. It allows character creation and progression in ways that the others don’t, and it tells a genuinely good story in ways that Bethesda’s hands-off “exploration sandboxes” fail to.

There is no point in arguing which of the two are genuinely superior since they are kind of apples and oranges, but both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas complement each other perfectly. They should forever be playable in a pair on the same platforms.

And for the record, both are better than Fallout 4.

Other games getting the backwards compatibility treatment are I Am Alive, Crystal Quest, Comic Jumper, Red Faction Battlegrounds, Joe Danger, Chronicles of Mystara, and Blood Knights. Still no Guardian Heroes! At least the appearance of Chronicles of Mystara, a similarly styled beat ’em up made by Capcom, gives me hope!
