If you’re a Zelda fan, you probably picked up on it right away, but if you’re used to modern gaming in general, it might’ve looked totally natural to you: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had voice acting, a first for the franchise.
The game won’t be fully voiced, but what we heard is definitely just the start. Speaking to Polygon, producer Eiji Aonuma said that he wanted to “leave impressions on users,” and added voices for those particular moments.
The first time he heard a character voiced, it “touched [his] heart.”
For those worried about the prospect of Link getting his own voice, though, don’t worry.
“If Link said something the user doesn’t agree with, the relationship between the user and link would be lost,” he said. “That’s why I chose not to go with that.”
Link, it seems, will be a silent protagonist for the foreseeable future. Check out the interview in the source link below for an in-depth dive into the sci-fi elements we saw hints of in that demo.
