Ben Affleck is going to write, direct, and star in his own Batman movie, but he’s in no particular hurry to finish the project. He said as much to journalists on the Justice League set a few days ago. A movie is coming—just don’t expect it to be released anytime soon.
“I think Warner Bros. has a date for it,” Affleck said. “Although, I don’t know if I would necessarily be able to make that date because I don’t have a script that’s ready yet. So my timetable is I’m not going to make a movie until there’s a script that I think is good. I’ve been on the end of the things when you make movies when you have a script that’s not good yet and it doesn’t pan out.
Apparently Affleck is working on a script for the upcoming Batman movie, but it’s not quite up to snuff. “It’s something that would have to pass a very high bar for me.” Affleck added that he doesn’t want to do the movie just because it sounds like a fun thing to do.
It’s still unclear what his solo movie would be though some rumors have tried spoiling what storylines the actor might take inspiration from. Whatever the case, you can expect Affleck’s Batman to do a lot more detective work—something we’ll also see him do in Justice League.
“I think all the great Batman stories are, at their heart, detective stories,” Affleck said. “That’s why they feel like noir movies in a way.”
Right now, Warner Bros. has two untitled DC movies scheduled for 2019 and 2020, but at the pace Affleck is going, not to mention his involvement in Justice League and other projects, it doesn’t sound like we’ll see his Batman movie by then.
