We’re still waiting for Samsung to unveil the Galaxy Note 7, but rumors around the Galaxy S8 are starting to heat up as well. The flagship phone probably won’t arrive until early next year, but a new report claims to reveal even more details about the smartphone.
According to some Weibo scuttlebutt spotted by Chinese site Netease, the Galaxy S8 will pack a 4K display and dual rear cameras. The tech blog notes that it can’t actually confirm the new rumor, and we’ve never really heard of this site before so we wouldn’t put a ton of faith in it anyway. Still, the Galaxy S8 rumors are quickly starting to pile up and the 4K display at least seems plausible for upping the VR experience.
In fact, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard The Galaxy S8 will pack a 4K display. A similar report from The Korea Herald said the same, and Samsung even showed off a VR-ready 5.5-inch 4K panel last month at an event in California. Kicking the resolution up a notch would also help Samsung compete in the high-end virtual reality market with its phone-based Gear VR setup.
Dual rear cameras aren’t much of a surprise either. Plenty of phones already offer the same setup, including Huawei’s impressive P9. Apple’s also expected to introduce a dual lens array with the iPhone 7 Plus, and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 could do the same. By the time the Galaxy S8 rolls around the new camera setup may be pretty standard, though it should still be a nice upgrade from the Galaxy S7.
So, while we don’t necessarily trust the source of these rumors, they don’t seem too far off base.
