Tumblr Live Video launching tomorrow to challenge Facebook Live, Twitter’s Periscope

Tumblr is set to add live video on Tuesday and is currently teasing the new feature with a series of cryptic posts. The update should help the Yahoo-owned social network compete with Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and YouTube, which all offer their own live streaming options.

The company recently set up a new Tumblr account called Live Video, which promises to officially launch on June 21. It also lists various upcoming broadcasts, ranging from the realistic the absurd. That includes a basketball lesson from the Harlem Globetrotters and a broadcast from the surface Mars.

Tumblr hasn’t made any official announcements, but TechCrunch was able to confirm the Live Video account is directly linked to the company. The service will apparently include lots of live content curated by Tumblr along with the option to stream your own videos.

Live Video has quickly become the next big thing for social media. Facebook’s live video platform is booming and Twitter’s Periscope service is chugging along as well. Tomorrow’s update should put Tumblr on an even playing field with the competition, even if it’s a little late to the game.
