Samsung took its time developing the excellent Gear S2 smartwatch (pictured above), but less than a year later the company is already working on a follow-up device. A new report offers the first details on what could be the Gear S3.
According to SamMobile, the upcoming wearable is already in the works under the codename Solis. That’s Spanish for “sun,” suggesting we could get another circular smartwatch like the Gear S2 (codename Orbit). The report also lists several model numbers (SM-R760, SM-R765, SM-R770), along with two carrier-specific versions (SM-R765V, SM-R765S).
The only other included detail is that the Gear S3 will stick with Samsung’s Tizen software, so don’t expect Samsung to offer an Android Wear device anytime soon. We don’t mind the Tizen-based operating system, but it does suffer from a bit of an app gap compared to Google’s software.
We’re still excited at the prospect of a Gear S3 and Samsung won’t have to change that much to crank out another great device. A few small tweaks, upgraded specs and refined software should be enough to pique our interest and hopefully attract more third-party developers to the platform.
