If you don’t like seeing expensive gear smashed into a million piece, then avert your eyes. However, if you enjoy watching technology lose a fight with the ground, you’re in luck, as this is the most deliciously cringeworthy video of the week (and it’s only Monday!).
While testing out gear at the Cine Gear Expo last weekend, an attendee found out that hard way that gravity and inexperience don’t mix, no matter how advanced stabilizers are. (Also, when wearing a rig designed to hold your expensive camera gear, that’s not an invitation to start salsa dancing.)
Unfortunately, the stabilizing rig buckled under the weight of the camera as the operator let go, resulting in a very expensive mess. Apparently that’s an Arri Alexa attached to the rig, which starts at $70,000 and can be as much as $100,000 depending on how it’s customized.
I’m not very familiar with stabilizer rigs, so I have no clue if this was user error or defective gear. Either way, it’s unlikely the camera survived the fall, making it a very expensive (and unfortunate) accident.
