Kingdom Hearts 2.8 trailer teases Kingdom Hearts III announcements this winter

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD is, clearly, not Kingdom Hearts III. It is, however, a new story line that fans will want to experience as they prep themselves for the next main entry that’s been hyped for years now.

According to the press release sent around this morning, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue “showcases Aqua, one of the original Keyblade wielders, and her battle against the Heartless.”

The battle is featured in a completely new playable episode in KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage, which is included in the HD compilation and includes next-generation graphics. The brand-new storyline will provide players with a preview of the upcoming events of the highly anticipated KINGDOM HEARTS III.

Forgive me, Kingdom Hearts diehards. I really dig this franchise, and I played the original and its sequel. I am not, however, versed in what’s been going on since. The numbering and naming have left me confused, if I’m being entirely honest, so I won’t try to interpret this plot line beyond what’s written in the release.

I do have to ask, though: are you big fans confused by the way Square Enix names these games? It makes outsiders feel a lot less welcome.

I digress. The news that I’m pumped for in all of this comes from a frame at the end of the trailer above. Here it is.

KHIII Announcements Coming

It sounds like Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD will be at E3. Kingdom Hearts III, however, will not. In fact, based on “upcoming announcements this winter,” I imagine we won’t see or hear from Kingdom Hearts III until then. Bogus, but this thing’s been a long time coming.

As for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, the title drops worldwide in December 2016 on the PlayStation 4.
