Warcraft, a fantasy epic directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), is being released on Friday, but before you head to the cinema, check out these official stills from the film.

This is a very ambitious project, one that’s from a director who isn’t well-known among mainstream audiences. Officially announced in May 2006, the film was initially set to be released in 2009, but after several delays and a few different directors, Duncan Jones stepped in to bring the project to completion. According to reports, principal photography finished in May 2013, with post-production apparently lasting twenty months.

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

The peaceful real of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people, and their home.

Despite what it looks like, Warcraft isn’t based on the popular MMORPG World of Warcraft, or even Warcraft III, but 1994’s Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. Of course, Jones and the team took some creative liberties when creating the film, so it’s not a direct translation of any one property. Instead, it was a joint effort from the filmmakers and Blizzard Entertainment, the latter of which just released the well-received Overwatch.

Warcraft stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, and Dominic Cooper, and is slated for a June 10 release.
