The music, the color variety, the animation, the movement style… Boy, Yooka-Laylee really looks like an effort from the makers of the wonderful Banjo-Kazooie. Have a look at the new E3 2016 trailer for Yooka-Laylee above, then move through the brand new screenshots below. It feels so Banjo-esque.
That’s the point, though. Playtonic Games is comprised of former Rare developers, and they Kickstarted Yooka-Laylee with the express intention of taking a crack at reviving the 3D platforming and collection genre. That’s one category of games that Banjo-Kazooie used to stand at the top of.
Yooka-Laylee doesn’t have a release date yet. As the trailer and press release both note, the game is slated to arrive some time in Q1 of 2017. When it does launch, it’ll be playable on the Wii U, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if an NX version somehow made it to release as well, though likely not on launch day for the title. Banjo games got their start on a Nintendo platform, after all.
