Instagram is finally making the big change it has threatened to implement for months. The company announced this week that it’s officially transitioning from a chronological feed to an algorithm designed to surface the photos and videos you care about most. The update is set to roll out to everyone this month.
In a lot of ways, the switch makes sense. Instagram continues to grow and as more people and brands join and follow each other it becomes harder to keep up. The company says people miss about 70 percent of the posts in their feed on average. Adopting an algorithm could ensure you don’t miss the most important ones.
Instagram’s new feed will presumably work like Facebook’s. The more attention a post gets, the more likely it is you’ll see it. But that also means some posts could get buried entirely. If that’s the case, you may never see them unless you visit the specific page for that account.
It’s still too soon to know how Instagram’s big change will play out. It could make for a significantly better experience, but it might also ruin the app and send users running to competing services like Snapchat. Either way, we should know pretty soon once the update starts to roll out.
