Battlefield 1: EA worried “younger consumers” didn’t know there was a World War I

Did EA just admit it was aiming for  “younger consumers” with an M-rated game? Or did it just take a major dig at the American education system, or any education system around the world for that matter?

No matter how you spin it, I’m not a fan of this quote from EA CFO Blake Jorgensen, who claimed to investors that EA debated the recent World War I setting in Battlefield 1 because it was worried its audience “didn’t know that there was a World War II or Vietnam, so World War 1…”

You have to think, at least someone with a basic high school education would know that those three conflicts existed, and everyone under the age of getting a full high school education is technically too young to play the game, am I right?

He followed up with a little clarification at least, saying:

“I think what people don’t understand about World War 1 is the technology shift that went on during the war. People started the war on horseback and ended the war with airplanes and tanks and battleships and submarines. And that’s a huge opportunity for us to be able to do a video game around.”

Again, this I at least knew, but it is true that those details are a little more specific. To worry that “younger audiences” didn’t know any of those wars happened, though, that’s a bit of a stretch and not giving the youths of the world enough credit.

Battlefield 1 will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on Oct. 21.
