343 Industries and Microsoft are aiming to give more creative power to the Halo community. They’ve announced that Halo‘s Forge mode, a map creation tool, is coming to Windows 10 PCs. Even better? It will be absolutely free.

It’s precisely called Forge – Halo 5: Guardians Edition. It sounds like you’ll need to push your creations onto the Xbox One for testing, but Forge on the PC will sport keyboard and mouse control as well as a UI built specifically for the platform.

Here’s the rundown from Microsoft.

  • Keyboard & Mouse Support – For the first time ever, Forgers will have the option of using a keyboard & mouse allowing for more precision control than ever before.
  • Increased Resolution – Support for multiple resolutions including 4k.
  • Test and Play with Friends – Enlist the help of Friends to help build, test, and play your Forge creations on Windows 10.
  • Build on Windows 10 and Publish to Xbox One – Experiences built on Windows 10 can be published to and played on Xbox One, opening the doors for countless new experiences to be enjoyed by players all over the world.

Pretty awesome.

We’ve reached out for clarification regarding whether or not you can test these maps on your PC or if you need to use your Xbox One. Once we have that bit from Microsoft, we’ll update this story.

Update: We’ve received clarification from a 343 Industries rep.

“Yes,” they said. “Map makers and creators will be able to build, play and test their Forge creations with friends on Windows 10 and also publish these experiences to Xbox One.”

Forge for PC does not have a release date yet, though Microsoft is pointing towards later this year.
