Nintendo and Level-5 have clearly deemed the Yo-kai Watch franchise worthy of international appeal. The sequel, Yo-kai Watch 2, has been announced to release in North America on September 30, 2016.
Nintendo’s effort with Yo-kai Watch in the west has certainly been aggressive so far. As the press release that brings us the news of this next localization indicates, “The U.S. has seen the launches of the YO-KAI WATCH video game for Nintendo 3DS, a line of Hasbro toys and games, a top-rated animated series that airs on Disney XD and the mobile game sensation YO-KAI WATCH Wibble Wobble all in the last six months.”
They call it a “phenomenon” in the release, though I’m not sure this franchise has been adopted by the west with the same ferocity it enjoys in Japan.
Yo-kai Watch 2 is, based on Japanese reception from when it originally launched in 2014, better than the original. It will come in two forms abroad, both with very silly names. We’ll have Yo-kai Watch 2 : Fleshy Souls and Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits. The license will also see new toys, merchandise and cartoons.
The original Yo-kai Watch is a neat little game. It scratches the Pokemon itch while still managing to offer mechanics all its own. Here are some screenshots of it.
