Rumor has it Google is about to move beyond Cardboard with a standalone Android VR headset. The announcement could come as soon as next week, but the company may have already confirmed the news by mistake.

AndroidPolice reports that “Android VR” now appears alongside Google’s other platforms in the Google Play Developer Console. You can see the icon in the ikmage above. Clicking on the new icon doesn’t actually do anything and the associated image is the same one used for Android Wear. This is likely just a placeholder, but it’s still the best evidence we have so far that something is brewing.

Google’s Android VR headset will reportedly fall somewhere in between Cardboard and the Oculus Rift/HTC Vive. The device apparently features a built-in display and sensors. It could cost between $200-$300, suggesting it could be more powerful than Samsung’s $100 Gear VR as well.

Google’s expected to reveal Android VR next week at its I/O developers conference. We’ll be covering the entire event so stay tuned for all the news starting on Wednesday, May 18.
