The next game in the Battlefront series will debut in 2017, EA revealed yesterday during an earnings call.
DICE, the company behind EA’s biggest shooters, Battlefield and Battlefront, has a full plate ahead of them with Battlefield 1 this year. It looks like EA has the studio alternating projects so that the teams working on them have more time to put out a good product. They’re doing the same with Need for Speed as well, as developer Ghost Games announced this week.
Despite come criticism regarding a lack of depth, the first in EA’s run on Star Wars Battlefront has done pretty well for the company, selling 14 million copies across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. EA has the exclusive license to the Star Wars franchise, and it has tons more on the way, including a third person title from Titanfall dev Respawn, a game from former Uncharted director Amy Hennig and Dead Space studio Visceral, and more. Battlefront was just the first shot in a big volley. With so many other titles on the way, EA can afford to move slowly. And, if Disney has their way, there’ll always be another Star Wars movie to match a new title up with.
While part of DICE is certainly planning Battlefront 2 for its 2017 release, though, the majority of the team is working Battlefield 1, set to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 21.
