New Viv virtual assistant makes Siri obsolete – And it was built by the same team

Siri who? The personal assistant who’s been present in Apple’s iPhone since 2011 was just upstaged by a new AI assistant, known as Viv—and it was created by the same team behind Siri.

At TechCrunch Disrupt NY, Dag Kittlaus and Adam Cheyer debuted the new technology in front of a live crowd, showing off what the next generation assistant can do. While Viv is still in development, she makes Siri look like an incompetent buffoon.

As you can see in the video down below, Viv is capable of handling incredibly complex requests that go beyond setting timers and asking for reminders. In a lot of ways, Viv reminds me of Hound, another assistant that can handle more complex requests. What makes Viv different, however, is she can connect to third-party merchants to purchase goods and book reservations.

Of course, the demo in the video is in a controlled environment, so we don’t really know how good Viv will be. From what we’re seeing, she’s much more capable than Apple’s Siri, which is only capable of handling the simplest of tasks; as far as digital assistants go, Siri is easily the worst of the bunch, surpassed by Google Now, Cortana, Alexa, Hound and now Viv.

According to Kittlaus, Viv has been in development for more than four years now, though it’s unclear when it’ll be available to the public. She looks promising so far, but we’ll reserve judgement until we get a chance to use Viv ourselves.
