Minecraft and Mario finally officially mashed up on Wii U

In a video game marriage that took way too long to come to fruiting, Nintendo and Microsoft have teamed up to present Wii U players with a Super Mario Maker and Minecraft mash-up. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack will release for the Wii U version of the game on May 17, 2016.

Even better news? It’s a totally free game update. You can sift through screenshots of the pack in the large gallery at the head of this post.

Yep, it’s Super Mario Bros. The press release that accompanied the screenshots included a quote from Nintendo of America Vice President of Publisher & Developer Relations Steve Singer.

“Both the Super Mario franchise and Minecraft embrace the magic of exploration and discovery… Players will have a great time adventuring and creating in this free game update that embraces the unique and memorable elements of both franchises”

On top of the skins and texture pack, the game’s soundtrack now includes “the smooth sounds of 15 pieces of music from Super Mario 64.” Okay, that’s awesome.

This is one free update I can totally get behind.
