iPhone 7 with Smart Connector gets “shelved,” rumor says

A few days ago, we learned the iPhone 7 might ship with a traditional headphone jack, despite multiple reports suggesting Apple was ready to ditch the 3.5mm port. Now a second popular iPhone 7 rumor may also turn out to be false.

Japanese site Macotakara reports that the iPhone 7 won’t ship with a Smart Connector. Apple apparently considered including the new technology but ultimately “shelved” the idea. It’s not clear if the feature made it into any early prototypes, though it did show up in several leaked images.

Apple introduced the Smart Connector last year with the iPad Pro. The new port was originally pitched as a connecting dock for accessories, including the company’s Smart Keyboard Case. More recently we learned that it’s also capable of charging the device.

The iPhone 7 is proving to be unexpectedly hard to pin down. With just a few months to go we don’t know much about the device for certain, suggesting Apple’s promise to clamp down on leaks may finally be paying off.
