Overwatch’s Competitive Play mode won’t be in open beta or at launch

While the versus mode at the core of Overwatch remains, the ranked Competitive Play mode will not be available in the upcoming open beta, nor will it be present when the game launches later this month.

The mode was present in the closed beta, but director Jeff Kaplan wrote in a forum post that the mode is being pulled so that the team can “rework the system and make it better” using feedback from closed beta participants. The mode will be introduced sometime after the game’s launch.

Kaplan isn’t saying much yet about how the mode will change – the five tiers seen in the closed beta could go away completely, or we could just be looking at some balancing tweaks that require a lot of background work.

The game will launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 24, and the open beta runs from May 5 to May 9.
