Mark Hamill confirms crazy rumor about Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber

The opening sequence in Star Wars: The Force Awakens got the action going pretty quick, with Poe Dameron getting captured by Kylo Ren and the First Order. According to Mark Hamill, however, the movie almost opened in a completely different—and macabre—way.

In an interview with British newspaper The Sun, Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, confirmed an early rumor that had been floating around for months before The Force Awakens even begun filming. Here’s what Hamill said:

I can tell you now that in the original opening shot of 7, the first thing that came into frame was a hand with a lightsaber, a severed hand that enters the atmosphere, and then the hand and bone burns away and [the lightsaber] goes sticking into the surface of Jakku. And this alien hand comes in, don’t know if it was Maz but it was an alien hand who takes the lightsaber away, and then the movie proceeds as you see it.

In relation to the larger story, opening with Luke’s severed hand holding onto the lightsaber makes a lot of narrative sense, but it’s certainly a morbid image. As is, the opening for The Force Awakens is perfect in its tone and pace, particularly the very first line, “This will begin to make things right,” which many people thought was a shot at George Lucas’ prequel trilogy.

As we previously discussed, Luke’s lightsaber has spanned several generations, and to see it pop up again in The Force Awakens was a delight for fans. We still don’t know how it wound up in Maz’s basement, but perhaps Hamill’s recollection of the scrapped scene will shed light on a future explanation, which we’ll hopefully get in Episode VIII.

Star Wars: Here’s what happened to Luke’s lightsaber

The new Star Wars left us with a lot of questions. What made Kylo Ren turn to the Dark Side? Where did Supreme Leader Snoke come from? Where is Jar Jar Binks? (Kidding.) We can go on and on. But the question I want answered most is how Maz Kanata, who we meet on the planet Takodana, […]

Film Fondue: We know exactly how Star Wars: Episode VIII will begin

With less than a month to go until Batman v Superman hits theaters, the marketing machine is now in overdrive. In addition to several new TV spots, plenty of new information about the film has come out, revealing Lex Luthor’s manipulative ways and Superman’s delicate psyche. You’d think someone so powerful wouldn’t be vulnerable but […]

Film Fondue: Here’s how they created BB-8 for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

This past week a pretty healthy mix of Marvel and DC, and then Lucasfilm unleashed new footage from The Force Awakens and completely stole the show. It’s incredible how just a few seconds can elicit such a strong emotional response. I know there are a lot of people out there who are upset that new […]

Luke Skywalker killed 369,470 people in the original trilogy

Why has Luke Skywalker been withheld from Star Wars trailers and marketing? J.J. Abrams refuses to tell us, which means we’re left to speculate about the character’s fate. There have been numerous rumors about his whereabouts—some say he’s hiding in a dark corner of the galaxy, while others believe he’s Kylo Ren. But did anyone […]

Luke Skywalker originally had a much darker last name

Thanks to the awesome Mark Hamill chatting with fans on Twitter, a bit of Star Wars trivia is making its way into the news. A lot of diehard fans have known bits and pieces of this little factoid for a long time now, but it’s still a nifty tidbit that has homages in more contemporary Star Wars […]

Mark Hamill disguised himself as a Stormtrooper for a good cause

Could it be that Luke Skywalker is actually moonlighting as a Stormtrooper, and not hiding in some faraway corner of the galaxy? In an effort to promote charitable organization Omaze and a Force for Change, Mark Hamill dressed up as a Stormtrooper and mingled with fans on the streets of Los Angeles. His tomfoolery was captured in […]
