Not even id Software can beat DOOM on the new Ultra Nightmare difficulty

How hard will DOOM‘s brand new Ultra Nightmare difficulty be? Pretty darn hard. With a little over two weeks until release, in fact, no one’s been able to beat it.

IGN spoke with id Software Creative Director Hugo Martin and Executive Producer Marty Stratton about the new mode. The only difference between Ultra Nightmare and Nightmare is permadeath. That’s right, on DOOM‘s toughest setting, dying once means the run is done.

Martin and Stratton told IGN that Ultra Nightmare currently stands unbeaten. The folks at the id Software offices have regular friendly competitions to see who can get the furthest, but the pair of devs offer that, so far, no one has even come close.

Nightmare difficulty has taunted gamers for decades now. I can remember talking about the mode when I was a kid, not believing a word of what my friend Matthew said about beating DOOM II on Nightmare while we chatted at recess. These guys are telling me there’s a mode even more obnoxious? Awesome.

DOOM is slated to hit the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms on May 13. If Ultra Nightmare is unlocked from the beginning, will you take it on straight away?
