Video: Obama wowed by Google Cardboard VR experience

Even Barack Obama seems impressed with virtual reality. During a visit to Germany, the U.S. President had a chance to test out an enhanced version of Google Cardboard. The video above shows both Obama and Chancellor Angela Merkel experiencing the technology.

The device appears to combine Google Cardboard with Project Tango by strapping a 3D camera to the front of the headset. This makes it possible to track your hands and other objects in virtual reality, offering an even more immersive experience.

It’s a pretty clever idea, and may even be where Google is eventually heading with virtual reality. The company is expected to launch a more advanced headset with built-in sensors, which could potentially include a 3D camera. It’s also set to hold several VR-focused panels at its I/O conference next month, so we may learn more pretty soon.

In the meantime, take a closer look at Obama as he experiences virtual reality in the gallery below. We can’t help but wonder what he’s seeing behind those glued-on googly eyes.
