Gearbox’s current project Battleborn is making its way through the DLC phase of its development period, meaning it’s in the twilight hours and should be wrapping itself up soon. And afterwards? Obviously, the studio is going to be returning to the franchise which put it on the map: Borderlands.
The only question now is what to call it.
Speaking at a panel at PAX East, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford made it very clear that there is “going to be another Borderlands.”
“We don’t even know if we’re going to call it [Borderlands 3]. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know.”
Gearbox’s creative lead Mikey Neumann also spoke on the game, stating he will be writing it and is currently pitching character ideas.
“I did this whole Scooter thing, then I pitch-shifted it up like seven semitones so it sounds like a chipmunk and it was the funniest thing I’d ever heard.”
The pair would go on to say there is plenty of Borderlands Easter Eggs in Battleborn as well, so be sure to keep an eye out for them.
In the meantime, how about a new Borderlands, everyone? I played through the first one once with a friend, and then played through it all over again. When we sat down to play Borderlands 2 together, we played for about an hour and said to each other “This again?” and quickly moved on to something else. I’m thinking now that enough time has passed to get excited for another one, but my interest in online gaming has also hit rock bottom since then as well, something that is not the Borderland‘s fault in the least.
I’m probably in a minority on this one, though. Borderlands 3 is a great proposal for a lot of gamers out there, and we’ll probably hear more about it soon.
