Google announced Monday that it’s finally adding support for the native Gmail application on Android smartphones. Previously, Exchange required additional hoops to jump through, or a different app entirely.

“Now, whether you’re on Google Apps or Exchange, you can use the Gmail app on any Android device to send and receive mail,” Google said of the update, which should be available now but may take a few days to automatically update on all Android smartphones.

This is good news for folks who use Exchange at work and who previously might have had a difficult time adding the account without a third-party option. Now the question is whether or not your IT department will actually let you use Gmail instead of something else.
