Who said the original Nintendo NES was dead? If you still have the old console lying around, breathe new life into by… using a PlayStation 4 controller with it? It sounds crazy but a new wireless adapter lets you do just that, bringing the decade’s old console into the modern age.
Called the Retro Receiver, the little dongle will essentially allow users to use Bluetooth-enabled controllers with the NES—even a wannabe Super Nintendo remote, which has long been considered the pinnacle of controller design. Sorry, no Nintendo 64 controllers need apply.
It probably feels a little naughty to play Super Mario Bros. 3 with a PS4 controller, but go on, we won’t tell.
The adapter is only $19 and was made possible through a partnership between 8bitdo and Analogue, the latter of which offers that insane 24k gold NES. Below are the controllers compatible with the dongle, per Analogue’s website.
- All 8Bitdo controllers & arcade sticks
- PS3, PS4
- Wii Mote, Wii U Pro
You can just as easily use an emulator on your computer with a PlayStation 4 controller, but that’s not nearly as fun.
