Microsoft “testing a variety of prototype Xbox devices,” says report

We’re officially up to our elbows in rumor and speculation regarding all three console makers and their hardware. Nintendo has the NX, a genuine product that we don’t know much about. PlayStation has the PlayStation 4.5 or PS4K (or NEO, according to the latest rumors), a product we know a lot about but haven’t officially confirmed. Microsoft? Well, rumors point towards an Xbox 1.5, even if Phil Spencer, the head of the Xbox team, says otherwise.

Now we have yet another report that suggests Microsoft is up to something with their Xbox line. The Verge is reporting that “sources familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans” indicate that Microsoft “has been testing a variety of prototype Xbox devices.” The report adds that these prototypes, at least some of them, are being “tested with upgraded components you’d use to improve the performance of a PC gaming rig.”

These prototype Xbox devices could be the ones with wireless chips that leaked recently thanks to FCC filings, or they could be modular upgrades that fall in line with the discussed notion that Microsoft will let users upgrade their Xbox One the same way they would a PC; that is, with components one at a time.

Maybe we’ll know something by E3. Maybe not. Either way, we’ll keep you posted.

Internally, and potentially even externally down the line, the company is calling it the PlayStation 4K. The PS4K will, according to Wall Street Journal‘s sources this time, be a “more powerful version” of the PlayStation 4. […]
